The bee's knees

Something is a-buzz in Barcelona. Following the success of Gracia Arts Project (GAP) in supporting independent artists here over the past two years, the association is now looking to create ‘The Hive of Gràcia’, a community arts centre.

The Hive (which will go by its Catalan name, ‘El Rusc’) will build on the foundations laid by GAP, providing a place to house 300 artists from all disciplines (twice the number that GAP can accommodate), as well as organising classes and workshops using facilities including a computer lab, dark room and pottery studio. Busy bees indeed.

While the plans for El Rusc are in place, the funding has yet to be raised, and this month (and continuing the insect theme, albeit tenuously), the proposal will be officially launched with a concert paying tribute to Beatles’ frontman John Lennon. October 9th would have been Lennon’s 69th birthday and the evening will see 15 musicians each perform two of his songs. A musical treat that promises to be as sweet as honey.
