Review: Brunch Electronik

by

No better way to rid yourself of that Sunday fear than at Brunch Electronik, which was back on Sunday for its first session of the year and Barcelona’s dedicated followers were ready and waiting to get things up and running. The show was a sell-out success, not surprising when you look at the quality line-up of DJs bringing a little bit of Detroit to Poble Espanyol.

Producer, remixer and DJ Terrence Parker got things going with his classic sound of Detroit house music. Since the release of Life on the Back 9 (2014), Parker has been gigging a lot more, great news for any house fanatics out there. Mixing some of history’s best house music with soulful samples, he really got the crowd going and geared them up for an unforgettable evening.

Parker was followed by another pillar of Detroit's underground music movement, Kevin Saunderson, who has been key to the development of Techno since the Eighties. As well as his skills as a DJ, Saunderson is also famed for his introduction of Inner City to the scene, teasing the Brunch Electronik crowd with samples from their hit ‘Good Life’, reminding us of the vastness of his musical abilities. He also treated the crowd to his old classic ‘Blackwater’ (2001), which features soulful vocals from his wife, Ann Saunderson.

Despite the absence of sunshine, the ever-growing crowd stayed put, awaiting the arrival of the final act—Carl Craig. Craig has been providing the world with ground-breaking music since 1989, and what a pleasure it was to witness the man in action at such a great venue. Craig gave us a taste of one of his fellow Detroit artists Jeff Mills, sampling his tune, ‘The Bells’. Playing out some funk and soul remixes, Craig made sure the crowd left with sore feet and happy hearts.

All in all, the Brunch team has done it again—an excellent danced-filled afternoon with some of Detroit’s finest acts, with food, drink and a great crowd to top it off. Although 10pm always seems to come round too soon, it’s safe to say that we were all glad of it waking up on Monday morning, starting another sunny week in Barcelona, feeling fresh and with the sounds of Detroit still beating in our brains.
