Take sides

Small but healthy competition is a good thing and the past is littered with youthful gang rivalries, both in life and in art, some more exaggerated and serious than others—Greasers v Socials, Jets v Sharks, Crips v Bloods—but always requiring a choice about which side to take. Now a new night at Apolo means deciding whether you favour the Rockers or the Mods.

You might already know which way you lean on this matter, but if not, there are some easy pointers: in transportation terms, it’s whether you prefer a Lambretta (Mod) or a Triumph (Rocker); what kind of outfit you are more likely to wear, a dapper suit (M) or dirty leathers (R). Another way to choose sides is by the type of music to be found in your vinyl collection: bluebeat and ska, or Gene Vincent and Elvis (surely you work out the difference by now).

Whatever your choice, head to Apolo and enjoy music from the Small Fakers, The Backbone Shakers and veteran northern soul and funk DJs Andy Lewis and Keb Darge. There will also be an exhibition of scooters (plus a chance to win one) and, randomly, a burlesque show.
