Opinion | Barcelona, Now More Than Ever!

Not many people can say that, when searching for the name of their city, the first song that shows up is performed by one of the best male voices in history and one of the greatest internationally acclaimed sopranos. Obviously I’m referring to the duet “Barcelona” sung by Freddie Mercury and “La Superba” Montserrat Caballé—a magnificent piece of music. It was originally composed for the 1992 Olympics, which transformed the growing economy and boosted the self-esteem of the Catalan capital. The Olympics catapulted the city into global focus, attracting tourists from all over the world, which in turn enticed investors to establish businesses in the area. Its privileged geographical location, climate, and culture contribute to the unique atmosphere of the municipality.

The recession in the 1980s hit Barcelona hard, but its people stood together, united and determined to improve its place in the international market. It smoothed out its rough edges, and with everybody rowing in the same direction, got back in the saddle and became an economic force in Spain. In 2008 Barcelona dealt effectively and resiliently with the global financial crisis as well, ensuring credibility and trust in its management. While the current cause is different in nature, Barcelonians remain resilient and prepared to endure with grace the tough challenges they face. 

It’s time to stand tall and look at the current events with defiant optimism in order to reclaim our position and positive spirit. The coronavirus has wreaked havoc worldwide and is responsible for a severe economic hit, but Barcelona will weather the storm. When good, industrious people are provided opportunities, they unleash their talents to achieve great things. That's the only way for the city to get back on top of the game, restoring its previous status and even reaching new heights. 

The sensitivity and creativity of the Ciudad Condal is reflected in the many architectural wonders that fill it. A positive self-image is fundamental if we are to accelerate our journey on the road to recovery, so be proud of being a part of Barcelona’s upcoming revitalization. Our unity and  collaboration are the engine and soul of this multifaceted, eclectic, innovative and inspirational place we call home.
