Barcelona attracts thousands of international buyers every year, from professionals relocating for work to families seeking a Mediterranean lifestyle. Many expats purchase properties that require updating or full renovation, especially in popular districts such as Eixample, Gràcia, Poblenou or Castelldefels.
But one of the most common questions new homeowners ask is simple:
“How much should I realistically budget for interior design and renovation in Barcelona?”
The answer depends on the condition of the property, the level of finish you want, and the scope of work. This guide breaks down realistic budgets for 2026, explains what influences costs, and helps expats avoid the most common financial surprises.
1. The Average Renovation Cost in Barcelona
In Barcelona, renovation costs are typically calculated per square meter, which makes it easier to estimate budgets early. As of 2026, typical renovation costs fall within these ranges:
A full renovation in Barcelona averages €700–€1,200 per m², depending on complexity and material quality.
For example:
Renovating a 90 m² apartment can cost roughly €75,000–€100,000 depending on finishes.
High-end renovations with premium materials can exceed €1,200 per m².
This means that many expat buyers purchasing older apartments should realistically expect renovation budgets between €70,000 and €150,000.

3. What Drives Renovation Costs in Barcelona

Older buildings often require:
- Electrical rewiring
- Plumbing replacement
- Structural adjustments
These upgrades increase the budget significantly.
2. Layout Changes
Moving walls or redistributing spaces increases costs because it requires:
- Architectural plans
- Structural checks
- New plumbing or electrical routes
This type of work can quickly add €10,000–€30,000 to a renovation.
3. Kitchens and Bathrooms
These are the most expensive rooms in any renovation.
Typical costs in Barcelona:
- Kitchen renovation: €8,000–€20,000
- Bathroom renovation: €5,000–€15,000
High-end kitchens or custom cabinetry can exceed €30,000.
4. Materials and Finishes
Materials dramatically influence the budget.
