How Stress Impacts Our Health
A Holistic Look at Stress and Its Effects on the Body

How many times have you demonized stress? We certainly have. But let’s be clear: stress, in its purest form, is designed to keep us alive. It’s not inherently the enemy.
Stress is a natural physiological response to challenge or threat. It primes us to act, to survive. The problem arises when this survival mode never switches off.
This article explores how stress affects our bodies and minds—and how chiropractic care may play a vital role in restoring balance.
What Is Stress, Really?
Stress comes in two forms:
- Acute stress: short-term and activating. It sharpens our reflexes, boosts energy and helps us think clearly. It’s what we feel before an exam, a competition—or, in our case, while writing this article.
- Chronic stress: when the body remains in a heightened state without time to recover. This is where trouble begins: anxiety, insomnia, digestive issues, high blood pressure, premature aging—the list goes on.
What Happens to the Body Under Stress?
When the body perceives a threat, it activates the sympathetic nervous system—the classic “fight or flight” response:
- Cortisol and adrenaline flood the system
- Heart rate and blood pressure spike
- Digestion slows, immunity weakens
- Sleep becomes elusive, anxiety rises
- Blood sugar surges for instant energy
- The primitive brain takes over, sidelining rational thought
In contrast, the parasympathetic nervous system—the “rest and digest” mode—helps us recover, sleep, digest, relax, and yes, even love.
The issue? Many of us are stuck in sympathetic overdrive, as if we’re constantly being chased by a lion. Over time, this is deeply damaging.
The Spine, Posture and Stress
Chronic stress can alter the natural cervical curve (lordosis), reducing vital capacity by up to one-third.
A collapsed posture—rounded shoulders, forward head, compressed chest—triggers the body’s defense mode and restricts deep breathing.
Try this: take a deep breath with an upright posture (open chest, relaxed shoulders, head aligned). Now try again with a slouched posture. Feel the difference? It’s dramatic.
The Nervous System: The Body’s Conductor
The brain, spinal cord and nerves form a continuous feedback loop. When disrupted—by poor posture, chronic stress or injury—this loop can spiral into negative patterns: irritability, fatigue, muscle tension and more.
This is where chiropractic care enters the picture.
What Chiropractic Care Offers
Chiropractic doesn’t “cure” disease. Instead, it helps the body restore its innate ability to self-regulate.
A chiropractic adjustment is a precise, controlled movement applied to the spine to optimize nervous system function.
It enhances neurological communication, posture, energy and mind-body connection. It can help shift the body out of sympathetic dominance and back into balance.
Practical Ways to Reduce Stress
Knowledge is power—and we love sharing it with our patients. Here are simple ways to reduce stress:
1. Physical Stress
- Aerobic movement: walking, swimming daily activity
- Maintain healthy posture
2. Chemical Stress
- Eat nourishing foods
- Stay hydrated
- Spend time in nature
3. Emotional Stress
- Prioritize sleep
- Practice breathing techniques (box breathing, Huberman method)
- Spend time with loved ones
Did you know that meaningful relationships are the strongest predictor of a long and happy life? Studies from Harvard, Cambridge and others confirm it: nurturing human connection doesn’t just feel good—it helps us live longer.
We can’t eliminate life’s stressors, but we can equip our bodies to handle them better.
Chiropractic care isn’t just for pain. It’s a powerful ally in reconnecting with our bodies, our vitality and ourselves.
