Botox and fillers are among the most popular cosmetic procedures, not least because of their widespread use among celebrities. Most of us think of Botox and fillers as solely aesthetic treatments that are used principally to combat the aging process, reduce fine lines and alter the upper face in particular. However, these popular and minimally invasive treatments can be used in so many more ways than most people are aware.
We spoke with the team from the Aesthetic Medicine Clinic, including plastic surgeon Dr. Lloyd Nanhekhan, ophthalmologist Dr. Rob Van der Veen, maxillofacial surgeon Dr. Alejandro Mazarro and dentists Dr. Claudia Wand & Dr. Elena Bensoussan to learn more about how these quick and easy injections can be used.
The Difference between Botox and Hyaluronic Acid Fillers
First of all, it is a good idea to be clear on the differences and similarities of these two easily confused treatments.
Hyaluronic acid, used in fillers, is a naturally occurring glucose molecule found principally in the skin. It is responsible for keeping the skin hydrated by absorbing and retaining water molecules, filling the dermis and therefore increasing its volume from within. Over time and with aging, the natural concentration of hyaluronic acid in your skin decreases, resulting in wrinkles. Consequently, it is advisable to apply creams containing hyaluronic acid and injections by a specialist to combat these aging effects.
On the other hand, Botox is derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum that inhibits neurotransmission in muscles, thus preventing their contraction. When injected into the face, botulinum toxin acts on the nerves that control the muscles, preventing movement, thus giving a much smoother and relaxed appearance to the face.
Both substances have a specific duration and are progressively reabsorbed by the body, after which a new session can be booked. Notably, hyaluronic fillers last up to 18 months and Botox up to six. Both have the same objective of skin rejuvenation, making you look and feel your best. It should also be noted that they can be carried out together to achieve even better results.

The Commonly Known Aesthetic Uses for Botox and Fillers
Aesthetic Botox injections and hyaluronic injections can boost your confidence through rejuvenating your skin.
Botox injections target the underlying causes of lines and wrinkles that occur over the years from repeated facial muscle contractions. They relax the muscles that cause expression lines, mainly in the upper part of the face: frown lines, crow's feet, horizontal forehead lines and more.
Similarly, hyaluronic acid injections hydrate the skin which in turn provides volume, structure and framework and therefore eradicates wrinkles.
The procedures are straightforward and very safe, but it is still important to seek out a specialized professional to obtain an optimal result.

The Less Well-Known Uses for Botox and Fillers
As well-practiced procedures, Botox and fillers can also be used for a wide range of alternative uses, as many aesthetic as preventative. It is little known that these treatments are also used to treat pathologies.
When it was first created, one of the initial uses for Botox was for treating blepharospasms, a movement disorder of the eyelid muscles. The muscle-freezing nature of Botox injections prevent a person’s eyes from becoming droopy or from twitching.
Another frequent but less-known use for Botox is to treat migraines. Injections to the back of the neck, at the base of the head or between the eyebrows relax the muscles and ease the pain.
Botulinum toxin is used to treat hyperhidrosis (medically diagnosed excessive sweating) by injecting the relevant areas, usually the underarms or palms, bringing significant results. It is recommended for people who have tried clinical-strength and prescription antiperspirants with no success.

Botox and Fillers in Dentistry
It may be even more unexpected to learn that Botox and hyaluronic acid are often used to treat dental pathologies.
For instance:
- Bruxism
- Gummy smile
- TMJ disorder
These treatments are incredibly effective, and the results usually last three months; when you repeat this procedure over time you generally require less frequent treatment to maintain the results.

A Focus on Natural, Long-Lasting Results That Boost Your Well-Being
It can be said that Botox and fillers have a variety of bad connotations that link to obvious, overdone aesthetic procedures that result in a “fake” look or one of having “had work done.” These associations can deter people from discovering the multidisciplinary uses of Botox and fillers to combat a wide range of medical conditions as listed previously.
It is important to emphasize that patients should seek expert care for these treatments. A highly qualified professional will be able to accurately replicate your desired final results with a fast and painless procedure.
