Welcome to the Metropolitan Culture Corner!
This month, we interview filmmaker, author and creative consultant, Steve Balderson. His visually stunning films have been screened at film festivals all over the world, including Cannes and others; Roger Ebert gave Balderon’s first film, Firecracker, starring Karen Black and Mike Patton, a Special Jury Award on his annual Best Films of the Year list in 2005. Since then, Balderson has made a name for himself on the international film scene, and is ranked in the Top 50 most influential Gay and Lesbian directors by IMDB. In addition to his filmmaking, Steve is also the author of several books, a voice-over artist, and hosts guests on his Filmmaking Confidental podcast. He has been a guest lecturer at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and has contributed to industry publications such as The Advocate and MovieMaker magazines.
Last month, we spoke with with Bea Castelló of Las Pepitas Vintage. She is a third-generation antique dealer specializing in textiles: vintage cloth, handmade laces, velvets, linen, including everything from fancy clothes to authentic period pieces for the home, such as tablecloths or bed coverings, from 1845 through the 1990s. Bea’s family has a long history in the vintage textile business: many pieces in local museums, such as the Rocamora collection in the Design Museum of Barcelona or the textiles in the Frederic Marès museum, came mostly from Bea’s family’s warehouse, back when it was run by her grandfather. She also rents pieces to award-winning theater and film production houses.
