Zoh Amba is a young Tennessee-based composer, saxophonist, and flautist known for her avant-garde music that fuses avant-garde, noise, and devotional hymns with folk melodies, hypnotic sayings, and repeated incarnations. Her work defies convention, with a sound that embraces a wide range of influences, from avant-garde to spontaneity and tradition.
After spending much of her childhood writing and practicing in the woods near her home, Amba studied music at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the New England Conservatory, as well as with maestro David Murray in New York. In 2022, she debuted with the album O, Sun, produced by John Zorn and released on the Tzadik label, a work that captivated the music scene with its creative force. This album was followed by Bhakti, a collaboration with figures such as Micah Thomas, Tyshawn Sorey, and Matt Hollenberg.
Amba has also worked with renowned musicians such as Jim White (Dirty Three), William Parker, Brian Chase (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and Frank Rosaly. She has performed at prestigious festivals such as Roulette (NY), Ars Nova Workshop (PA), Vision Festival (NY), ReWire Festival (NL) and Big Ears Festival, among others.
