Zeng Fanzhai
Great Man Nº. 5 (2004)
Zeng Fanzhi was born in the industrial Chinese city of Wuhan in the late Sixties and, following a sickly childhood, he later studied at the Hubai Fine Arts Academy. His artwork combines influences from both East and West: traditional Chinese painting, socialist realism and abstract expressionism. The pieces on show here, the first time he has exhibited in Spain, are said to be some of the most personal of his collection, works that he would never sell. They include five large portraits (220x170 cm) featuring five men whose influence, power and philosophies created China in the 20th century: Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin and Mao.
