The idea of composing in all 24 possible combinations of tonality and modality has captivated many composers throughout history. A notable example is Shostakovich, whose 50th death anniversary is being commemorated this year. He created one of the finest works under this concept: Preludes and Fugues, Op. 87, inspired by J. S. Bach's masterpiece The Well-Tempered Clavier.

For her upcoming performance at the Palau de la Música Catalana, Russian pianist Yulianna Avdeeva has chosen this monumental work, which spans over two hours.
