Writers Elaine Vilar Madruga and Anna Starobinets join Maria Isern to discuss how speculative and dystopian fiction, horror and the fantastic have become key literary languages for exploring the most unsettling aspects of our intimate and social lives.
Why has the nightmare become such a fertile way of writing about the body, desire, family and power? What happens when the everyday becomes strange, oppressive or monstrous? The works of Elaine Vilar and Anna Starobinets often begin with situations pushed to the extreme: bodies that transform, suffocating family relationships, and worlds governed by absurd or cruel rules. Through different literary registers and imaginative universes, both authors use darkness to examine closely what so often becomes normalized. In this conversation, they reflect on literature's ability to turn horror into a tool for investigating power, vulnerability and the forms of control that shape contemporary life.
