Describing the group Wednesday's sound is far more difficult than it first appears. You can talk about distortion, about the layers and layers of feedback that the quintet from Asheville amasses; about a vocal pitch that goes between slacker and anguish; about glass guitars that can go on and on without shattering until the song is over five minutes long; and about their strategic position as a link in the chain of American alt-rock tradition.

Still, even with all these familiar markers, Wednesday creates the sense that something is always just out of reach. With this band, appearances are deceptive. Led by Karly Hartzman, Wednesday continually conceals a compelling musical secret, like a family that guards a dark mystery across generations. The group always seems to know more than anyone else.

Following the high point of Rat Saw God, their 2023 album, the band returns to an ongoing fixation on translating Southern rock into the present tense.
