Never in history have young people been as portrayed and exhibited as much as today: they have within reach countless media for the production and dissemination of images, but occasions in which they find a space and time to express themselves, think about themselves and be listened to are few and far between.
The project aims to open up a vanishing point with respect to the prejudices of adults towards young people, and also with respect to codes of representation that often limit or restrict their ways of being and of showing themselves.
We are 17 will also show, for the first time in Barcelona, the thirty portraits that filmmaker Johan van der Keuken made of his own group of friends when they were 17 years old, in the year 1955. His was a revolutionary gesture, with a boldness almost unprecedented: take the floor and enunciate himself in the first person. Seventy years later, this exhibition is conceived as an interpellation and a meeting space to vindicate the fact of being and doing things together through workshops and public activities. At the same time, it is an opportunity for visitors of all ages to listen to young people and think about them from other places.
