Russian pianist Varvara is a soloist who enjoys significant international acclaim. At this concert, she'll tackle a complicated repertoire that has been described as "the Everest of Romantic music."
That repertoire is the last three piano sonatas by Ludwig van Beethoven. He composed these brilliant works between 1820 and 1822 at a late stage in his career and in a state of almost total deafness. The composer thus completed the extensive corpus of piano sonatas he had been compiling for almost three decades; in a way these three works conceived as a whole represent the pinnacle of the German master’s relationship with the piano as a solo instrument. They are pieces of colossal almost symphonic dimensions in which Beethoven surrenders himself to an idealistic and extreme form of writing rich in contrasts and lofty spiritual flights.
