Film still from "Universal Language," directed by Matthew Rankin (Canada, 2024).
Universal Language, Matthew Rankin (Canada, 2024)
Somewhere between Tehran and Winnipeg, Negin and Nazgol find a sum of money frozen in the winter ice and try to retrieve it. Massoud leads a group of increasingly bewildered tourists through Winnipeg’s monuments and historical sites. Matthew leaves his job in the Québec government and embarks on a mysterious journey to visit his mother. Space, time and personal identities intertwine.
One of the most awarded films of the year is also one of the most surreal and original comedies of the season, with three stories that blend together as do Canadian culture, Iranian culture and any pretense of cinematic orthodoxy.
Film will be screened in original version (Persian, French) with Spanish subtitles.
A film in the 2025 edition of D'A Film Festival.
