On April 25th, 2026 — the exact centenary of the premiere of Turandot at famed opera house La Scala — the Franz Schubert Filharmonia will join other great orchestras and institutions around the world to commemorate that historic event.
On Sunday, April 25th, 1926, Milan’s La Scala opera house hosted the world premiere of Turandot, the final opera by Giacomo Puccini, who had died almost 18 months earlier. The performance was a resounding success. Exactly 100 years later, the Franz Schubert Filharmonia and Orfeó Català will be joined by a first-rate cast of soloists, headed by Armenian soprano Lianna Haroutounian, a memorable Madama Butterfly at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, and Catalan tenor Xavier Moreno, who has recently played Prince Calaf in productions staged in Germany.
The audience will hear the work from beginning to end — unlike the Milanese audience at its premiere, when the legendary conductor Arturo Toscanini brought the orchestra to a halt at the last note written by Puccini before his death, leaving the opera unfinished.
This opera is one of the works that inspired conductor Tomàs Grau to pursue a career in music. He will lead an exceptional cast in a performance full of impact and emotion. It's unique event designed to celebrate two milestones: Giacomo Puccini’s universal legacy, and the company's 20th anniversary.
