For over two decades, an Editors song has been instantly recognizable by Tom Smith’s voice. Solemn, penetrating, imposing. Even when, at the beginning of the century, they seemed to belong to a post-punk package alongside other bands like Interpol, Maxïmo Park or The Bravery, Smith was the defining characteristic of the British group.
Unmistakable: “Munich,” “The Racing Rats” and “An End Has a Start” resonate in the millennial collective consciousness as Editors songs thanks to his performance.
Now his voice is at the service of another repertoire: his own. “I have no idea if it’s folk, country, a romantic ballad or what, I’ve simply always had the vocation to write and sing sad songs,” the Briton says about his first solo album, There Is Nothing in the Dark That Isn’t There in the Light. A signature title for a new stage.
