Ahead of their upcoming appearance at Primavera Sound Festival, The xx are playing in Barcelona.
The trio are riding a wave of success after the release of their second album, Coexist (2012), which won the Impala prize for European independent album of the year. Quite a step up from their humble beginning—their debut studio album xx (2009) recorded in a garage and produced by the band.
Their music drips with rhythmic and repetitive beats, masterfully layered with breathy vocals and, at times, haunting, lingering strings. Their songs are beautiful in their simplicity, seamlessly mingling electronic notes with guitars and vocals. The threesome—Romy Madley Croft, Oliver Sim, and Jamie Smith (known as Jamie xx)—formed in London in 2005, and they recently wrote the song 'Together' for Baz Luhrmann's upcoming film version of The Great Gatsby.
