The "Other" in The American Dream
to
CaixaForum Barcelona Av. de Francesc Ferrer i Guàrdia 6-8, 08038 Barcelona
The myth of the American dream is solid and transparent in its boundaries: salvation is guaranteed by your actions and success is achievable for all through hard work and individual determination. Is that true? Or is it just good marketing?
This session explores the idea of evil in the community and the exclusion from the American dream, the figure of the outsider and the notions of dissent, which have historical roots in colonization, the breakdown of the American dream in modernity from two world wars, the importance of the atomic bomb in pop art, and much more. The extraterrestrial as a metaphor for racism shows up again and again in examples from pre-punk culture, the counterculture of the sixties and fantasy films.
