The Night of the Hunter, Charles Laughton (United States, 1955)
The Night of the Hunter, the only film made by Charles Laughton, provokes in the spectator the sense of pure terror that one felt as a child. When making this neo-noir thriller, he requested a collaboration with Stanley Cortez, a director of photography whom he knew from his previous films as an actor.
Alien to the more realistic lighting typical of the fifties, Cortez and Laughton bring back the visual legacies of German expressionism to treat with moving originality the nocturnal and threatening forest of childhood nightmares: a forest populated by fogs and strange shapes that come to dramatize the eternal struggle between light and shadow. This film will feature in José Luis Guerin's film series, The Film Landscape in which he explores the idea of "A Forest in Shadows."
The film will be screened in English and subtitled in Catalan.
