The Necks are one of Australia’s most prominent cult bands, consisting of Chris Abrahams (piano), Tony Buck (drums) and Lloyd Swanton (bass). Since their inception, this trio has redefined the concept of a jazz band, as Geoff Dyer states: “The Necks are often labelled a jazz trio, but this must be qualified immediately, as they have completely re-imagined the idea of the jazz trio.”
Their sound, which mixes minimalism, free improvisation and systems music, has been described by The Guardian as “an extraordinary trio that brings a sense of long-term development… Ascetic in structure, but imbued with a human warmth, their pieces are filled with minor epiphanies that lead us to a greater sense of emotional satisfaction.”
Their music, marked by long improvisations that transport the listener into an almost hypnotic state, has been compared to a “magic act disguised as a piano trio” (Los Angeles Times). Their pieces, which may seem simple, display a patient and transformative beauty that leaves a feeling of tranquility and elevation, as one fan says: "I love the space they create to take us through time."
