Within the framework of Barcelona 2026 World Capital of Architecture and the celebration of the Congress of the International Union of Architects (UIA), the Urbanisme Research Group (GRU) of the Department of Urbanism, Territory and Landscape (DUTP) at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), has designed an exhibition focused on the process of the material construction of the metropolis and its relationship with urban planning over the last 150 years.
Using graphic documents (maps, plans, archival and current photographs, press materials), as well as videos and films, accompanied by headlines and concise texts illustrating the long process of constructing the metropolis, the exhibition illustrates the changes in theories of the city within urban and territorial design, and on the different modes of urban intervention applied in each period.
This exhibition wants to contribute to the revealing of our metropolitan reality, to raise awareness among citizens in general, and agents of the construction of the city in particular, of the importance and social utility of urban planning involved in the gestation of the metropolis.
