British indie rock band The House of Love was formed in 1986 in Camberwell, South London, and released their first single, “Shine On,” on Creation Records in May 1987. Following this, two more singles, “Real Animal” and “Christine,” were released before their debut album in June 1988 to enthusiastic reviews. Live performances showcased the band’s dynamism, with critics agreeing that they were outstanding. Both Guy Chadwick and Terry Bickers were primarily guitarists, creating a texture upon which Guy Chadwick’s poetic songs were built. Guy had a vision of sound, and Terry helped him greatly in realizing it. John Peel, who saw them in Leeds in 1988, said in The Observer, “The House of Love proved in a matter of seconds that they have that inner tension that makes a band great and not just good. This was one of those performances that I wish I could take with me.”
