Film scores have increasingly been included in concert hall repertoires, a genre until recently overlooked by critics and composers alike. They represent an immense (and often sentimental) musical heritage of the twentieth century. Film music did not originate with sound film but earlier, when it was first recognized that music could enhance the dramatic effect of images. It was not until the early 1930s that a group of composers, mostly European, emerged to create “film music.” Pioneers include Max Steiner (Gone with the Wind), Erich Wolfgang Korngold (The Adventures of Robin Hood), Alfred Newman (Wuthering Heights), Dimitri Tiomkin (Lost Horizon), and Franz Waxman (Rebecca). This lecture examines these early stages of film music and the contributions of its creators.
