Armando Merino leads the Barcelona Symphonic Band with works on the theme of fire at the L’Auditori.
The first piece on the program is Of War and Peace by Michael Daugherty. In the composer’s own words, the work is his "sonic response to the never-ending tragedy of war and the hope for peace." The composition was written in two movements—the first representing war and the second, peace—and designed to be performed without an intermission.
Then follows the Poème du Feu ("Fire Poem") by Ida Gotkovsky—whose 90th birthday the Band is celebrating—in which the composer explores the relationship of humanity with fire as a sacred element and as an incandescent life force.
The program closes with Anemos C, the chamber work by Francisco Guerrero Marín, one of the last century’s most original Spanish composers, and the groundbreaking The Firebird, the first musical success for Igor Stravinsky, written for the Ballets Russes in Paris at the start of the 20th century.
