The famous poem by Dante Alighieri takes on a different shape in the new ballet by Wayne McGregor for The Royal Ballet.
The Divine Comedy of Dante is an epic journey through the afterlife; it interweaves the horrible drama of Hell, the mysticism of pilgrims in Purgatory, and the dazzling spheres of Paradise with its infinite configurations of light.
The poem was inspired by the poet's agonizing exile, which led him from crisis to revelation, guided by his literary hero Virgil and his lost love Beatrice.
In this new work, The Royal Ballet alongside avant-garde resident choreographer Wayne McGregor, collaborates with a distinguished team: contemporary composer Thomas Adés, artist Tacita Dean, lighting designer Lucy Carter and the playwright Uzma Hameed. Together the team give a new twist to Dante’s lyrical poetry through dance, glorifying and honoring the extraordinary vision of a master wordsmith.
The performance will be the world premiere, and will be shown simultaneously at several theaters around Barcelona. Please see the event website for details.
