● Comedy Clubhouse expansion reflects Barcelona’s growing repuation as a top destination for live comedy – from grassroots to international superstars
Barcelona’s premier comedy club, The Comedy Clubhouse, is opening a brand-new multi-stage venue this summer in the heart of the city’s historic Ciutat Vella.
The new club, located on the iconic Via Laietana, will officially open its doors on Saturday 5th July 2025 , with a line-up headlined by internationally acclaimed comedian and recent Barcelona transplant, Michelle Wolf, plus special guests.
This marks the second venue for The Comedy Clubhouse, following three successful years operating its current space in Carrer dels Canvis Nous in the Born district, which will remain open.
What began in 2020 as a pop-up space in the basement of an Irish bar, with maskedcomedians performing at strange hours to handfuls of people to comply with the city’s Covid restrictions, has since grown into a thriving, multi-language comedy brand.
The Comedy Clubhouse has been an important development hub for local acts like Irish sensation, Kyla Cobbler, while also attracting some of the top comedic talent in the world for the past three years, including Louis CK, Mark Normand and Trevor Noah. The new venue reflects the growing demand from customers for a more premium experience with a bigger, purpose-built space for live entertainment and post-show socialising.
The new Comedy Clubhouse Laietana will feature two separate stage areas to host a fullprogram of stand-up comedy, format shows and live music performed in English, Spanish, Catalan and other languages.
Alongside its comedy and live music program, the new venue will serve food prepared by Nikki’s Kitchen, known for its delicious, globally inspired fried chicken dishes. It aims to be a welcoming space for Barcelona’s local and international communities to connect through fun, culture and laughter.
The first major shows to be announced at the new venue are: Michelle Wolf and Friends (July 5), Mike Rice (July 18 and 19), Improv sensations, Sergi Polo (August 23), Shoot From The Hip (September 19 and 20), and Patrick Spicer (November 15).
Comedian Michelle Wolf, who has recently joined the company’s group of shareholders, says “When I first moved to Barcelona, I had no idea how developed the comedy scenehere was. In many ways it reminds me of the vibe in New York when I was first coming up.
There’s a fantastic pool of local talent in this city and I’ve seen it go from strength to strength over the past few years, which is why I’m so excited to perform at this new venue."
”Since the end of the pandemic, the comedy scene in Barcelona has expanded enormously, driven by a group of passionate local comedians and producers. Comedy across Europe isbooming in general, with scenes popping up all across the continent. The English language circuit in Barcelona has grown steadily thanks to the city’s increasing population of English-speaking ex-pats and digital nomads, and its place as one of Europe’s most-visited year-round holiday destinations. Last year, the city held its first ever Comedy Fringe Festival across multiple venues.
John Allis, founder of The Comedy Clubhouse, said, “Since we opened our first venue,we’ve seen comedy become one of Barcelona’s most unexpected and exciting cultural and entertainment attractions. With this growing demand — from both audiences and performers— it felt like the right time to open a second, bigger venue. It will have a different feel to our current space and will have more to offer such as live music and food, but we’ll have thesame great vibes and welcoming attitude that our customers have come to expect from us.“
“As well as attracting some of the top English-speaking talent from around the world, we aim to increase the number of shows we produce in Spanish and Catalan. We believe comedy is the perfect way to bring people together – especially in such a multi-cultural city like Barcelona. No matter where you’re from, everyone loves and deserves a good laugh.
”With this new venue opening, we can now offer a more varied selection of performance spaces for local and travelling act across our two clubs, which are within one minutes’ walk from each other. We hope that even more top acts will put Barcelona on the top of their lists of cities to perform in.
”The Grand Opening on Saturday 5th July will feature a showcase of Barcelona’s best local and international comedians, live music and DJs until late.
