"The Big Johnson," directed by Lola Rock'N'Rolla (USA, 2025).
The incredible life and mysterious death of Dean Johnson, an icon of drag-punk subculture and the underground night scene of 1980s and ’90s New York. Through a fast-paced “oral history” delivered by those who knew him, the film reconstructs the adventures of a singer, musician, LGBTIQ+ activist, escort, orgy promoter, and leader of bands like The Weenies and The Velvet Mafia who defied homophobia, addiction, and the AIDS crisis from the heart of the East Village. His famous parties, provocative songs, and presence at venues like Club 57, The Pyramid, Rock and Roll Fag Bar, and the Wigstock festival transformed the queer community. A raw chronicle of an intensely free and dangerous era, and the indelible mark left by an indomitable giant.
Film will be screened in its original version with subtitles in Spanish (Oct. 31) and Catalan (Nov. 2).
A film in the 2026 edition of the In-Edit International Music Documentary Film Festival.
