The Bad Plus is a band that has been breaking boundaries for over 20 years, exploring the fusion of jazz with elements of rock, electronic and experimental music. Their sound, original and intricate, has evolved continuously, offering a unique perspective on the musical landscape. From the beginning, the original trio established a strong identity defined by a distinctive style that blended jazz improvisation with guitar-like riffs and a powerful rhythmic foundation.
In 2022, following several lineup changes, the band released their album Complex Emotions—a work that stands out for its ability to reinvent itself and explore new sonic textures. This album marks a new chapter for the group, now performing as a quartet, with Reid Anderson (bass), Dave King (drums), Ben Monder (guitar) and Chris Speed (saxophone). With Complex Emotions, The Bad Plus continues to deliver intense, expansive music that defies conventions. The album brings a more ambitious sound palette, blending experimental tones with fusion elements and broadening the band’s musical horizons. Their compositions span a wide emotional spectrum—from raw intensity to moments of subtlety and introspection.
The band has achieved lasting success, with a loyal fan base that values their constant evolution while maintaining a clear artistic identity. Despite changes in their lineup, The Bad Plus remains a benchmark in contemporary jazz, paving new paths for future generations of listeners.
