While not yet as famous as his idol Stephen Sondheim, American composer Jason Robert Brown has nevertheless garnered a reputation for a robust career. Working with pop idol Ariana Grande and the 2014 film adaptation of his musical The Last Five Years, starring Anna Kendrick, has boosted his profile in recent years, but his debut musical, Songs for a New World, still stands up as an ambitious, enjoyable piece of theatre. Described as neither musical nor revue, it's closer to a theatrical song cycle, featuring four performers who sing numbers connected by a common theme: the important decisions we must make in life and whether we take a step backwards or forwards when making them.
Now the production comes to Barcelona, to be performed in Catalan at Teatre Gaudí by local amateur theatre group Vocal Factory. Performances run daily until July 30th and tickets cost €20.
