SWAB Barcelona
Since Swab was founded in 2006, it has gained an international reputation through the support of galleries all around the world. This year, it returns for its fifth edition with "a programme that creates a cultural bridge between Catalunya and the rest of the world".
The clue is in the name (as in, the small piece of a absorbent material attached to the end of a stick or wire). What Swab aims to do is shed light on new talent, and so the four-day art fair will focus on young and emerging contemporary art stars, which would otherwise struggle to find such an opportunity. It's a fantastic opportunity for the public to see the breadth of contemporary art available.
Last year, Swab built on the success of previous years and presented 48 galleries from 15 different countries in a new building with more capacity. Following such success, this year, being the fifth edition, will see collaboration with 70 galleries from all around the world and feature a whole new programme.
This time, it's not just about exhibiting. The programme includes the promotion of recently opened galleries through MYFAF (My First Art Fair), a Swab kids initiative in a bid to encourage the future generations of the art world, the aptly named Lounge Zone and Chillout Terrace, street-art in the Raval and a secret postcard sale (buy an original artwork by well known figures for €25 and the artist will be revealed after the sale!)
Swab will take place from May 23rd to 26th. You can buy a day pass, two- or three-day pass or concert pass for the opening ceremony on May 23rd. See the Swab website for more details.
