Sun Ra Arkestra
Perhaps one of the greatest, most controversial, yet least known jazz artists of all time, Sun Ra was a truly a phenomenal composer and his concept of 'cosmic philosophy' lives on through Marshall Allen and the Arkestra.
Allen was once himself a pupil of Sun Ra - having joined the Arkestra in 1958, he toured with Sun Ra for most of his musical career. On becoming the Arkestra's musical director in 1995, Allen swore to maintain the spirit of jazz and Sun Ra, but also to compose new arrangements for the Arkestra, making it more than just a 'ghost' band.
Each Sun Ra Arkestra concert is an attack on the senses, taking you on a journey through all the jazz ages, performed by some of the masters on the subject. This is the Arkestra's first return to Barcelona after nine years, allowing some to discover and rediscover one of the most important jazz line-ups ever formed.
Advance tickets are €25 or €30 on the door. This event is part of the 2013 Mas i Mas Festival; read our feature article on the festival and the Sun Ra Arkestra here.
