Steve McCurry: ICONS
to
Palau Martorell Carrer Ample 11, 08002 Barcelona
"Afghan Girl," Steve McCurry, 1984.
Photography has a unique capacity: it can tell stories without words. A look, a gesture, or a frozen moment can contain more meaning than entire pages of text. It is in this realm, between silence and emotion, that the work of Steve McCurry, one of the great names in contemporary photography, unfolds.
The Palau Martorell presents ICONS, a major retrospective dedicated to the American photographer, bringing together more than 100 large-format images. The exhibition offers a journey through more than four decades of his career, with photographs that have become iconic and have helped define the way we see the world.
Among the most outstanding works is the famous portrait of Sharbat Gula, known as “the Afghan woman with the piercing gaze,” an image captured in a refugee camp that has become a universal symbol of human dignity and resilience. But beyond this photograph, ICONS also showcases scenes of everyday life from around the world: children playing, anonymous gazes, human landscapes that speak of conflict, beauty and hope.
McCurry’s work is characterized by a constant exploration of what unites us as human beings. His images not only document distant realities but also reveal shared emotions: childhood, loss, curiosity and survival. In this sense, his photography transcends reportage to become a universal language capable of connecting cultures and experiences.
ICONS is not just an exhibition, but an invitation to look more closely. To understand that behind every face, there is a story that doesn’t always need to be told with words. And it is precisely in this silence, full of nuances and emotions, that photography finds its deepest power.
