The Stabat Mater, a Latin poem that evokes the Virgin Mary's suffering during Christ's Passion, has inspired composers from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. The anonymous text—of 13th-century Franciscan origin and attributed to Jacopone da Todi, Pope Innocent III, and Saint Bonaventure—is long, somber and rich in imagery.
In this concert, the work of 20th-century Swedish composer Knut Nystedt leads a program that also features one of Bach’s Cello Suites and the world premiere of a choral and solo cello composition by Raquel García-Tomás, this season’s guest composer at the Palau de la Música.
