The intensity of Wagner’s long operas is condensed into overtures, instrumental passages that anticipate some of the fundamental motives and essential elements for the development of dramatic action. A ghostly journey evokes Der Fliegende Holländer, the opera Wagner wrote in 1841 based on a disturbing legend. Depending on the day of the concert, this overture will continue in two different ways, both fast-paced and lavish in stirring listeners’ emotions.
On Friday, Inés Issel will take the leading role in Prokofiev’s compelling Violin Concerto No 1 and on Saturday, Emma Stratton will perform the solo part in Mozart’s delightful Piano Concerto No 23, a deeply classical score that seems to anticipate Romanticism in such heartfelt movements as the adagio. The impressive Symphony No 2 by Jean Sibelius, with sounds that sublimely evoke the immensity of the Nordic landscape, will conclude both concerts under the direction of Anthony Hermus.
