This year, Shabaka has released a very special album, Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace, which represents, as he has said, “a return to the origins.” Far from the instrument that made him famous with two bands that became the standard-bearers of British jazz around the world—Sons of Kemet and The Comet is Coming—Shabaka proposes an introspective and spiritual journey based on various flutes (from the Japanese shakuhachi to the Andean quenas, passing through the Slavic svires) and the clarinet, his first instrument. The result is an album and a live performance that have been compared to references such as John and Alice Coltrane for their meditative intensity.
“Shabaka’s ambitions are clearly beyond genre, but he’s also still a jazz guy,” wrote Evan Haga in Spin about the album. A concert that will also be an adventure.
