The exhibition portrays how the company SEAT triggered a series of profound transformations that went far beyond the automotive sphere. The establishment of SEAT had a decisive impact on the country’s economy, urban planning, architecture, culture, and politics, becoming a central force in the modernization of Catalan and Spanish society.

Divided into five sections, the exhibition begins by exploring the reasons behind the decision to establish the factory in Barcelona, a development that accelerated the industrialization of the Zona Franca district and promoted the creation of a modern industrial colony in what is now the Marina neighborhood. This process positioned the company as a symbol of the Franco regime during a period of economic opening and the redefinition of international alliances.

One of the exhibition’s main themes is the analysis of worker control mechanisms and the clandestine struggle led by workers’ commissions. Labor demands at SEAT became a pioneering force within the workers’ movement for democracy. The exhibition pays special attention to the strike of October 18, 1971, which ended with the police occupation of the factory and the fatal shooting of worker Antonio Ruiz Villalba.

SEAT: Factory of Transformations concludes its journey by tracing working-class memory in the Marina neighborhood and examining the brand’s influence on contemporary culture and society. The exhibition brings together archival photographs, objects, and historical documents, as well as artistic installations that invite visitors to reflect on the contrast between the struggle to preserve memory and the current social and urban transformations affecting the neighborhood.

The exhibition will occupy the new Guardhouse building, recently restored.
