Alban Berg’s Violin Concerto, dedicated “to the memory of an angel," was composed in honour of Manon, the daughter of Alma Schindler and Walter Gropius. The piece blends the revolutionary techniques of Schönberg and Webern with a profound emotional resonance that continues to move audiences today. A recurring motif is drawn from the chorale Es ist genug by Johann Sebastian Bach, giving the work a distinctive and memorable tone. The concerto premiered on April 19th, 1936.
Exactly 110 years earlier, Franz Schubert composed one of the most monumental symphonies in music history. Although he never lived to see it performed, the work stands as a masterful display of orchestral contrast. Across its four movements, Schubert unleashes a powerful range of expression, revealing a level of compositional creativity rarely equalled.
