The concert opens with a new work by Sílvia Lanao, commissioned by L’Auditori as part of the "Canta amb l’OBC" (Sing with the OBC) project. The young composer (Girona, 1995) is fascinated by the exploration of musical colors and textures. Following the performance of her piece, two paradigmatic works from the classical repertoire are presented.
The first is Dmitri Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1, composed in 1959 for his friend Mstislav Rostropovich, who premiered it the same year under the baton of Yevgeny Mravinsky. The second part of the program features the symphonic suite Sheherazade by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, which the composer himself conducted in 1888—an expression of exotic fantasy told not through words, but through the evocative power of sumptuous orchestral music.
