Verdi created Rigoletto in his compositional maturity. Premiered in 1851 at La Fenice, it was inspired by the play Le roi s'amuse by Victor Hugo. A controversial opera for its original political content and modified by order of censorship, it was a resounding success in its premiere and its protagonist became the symbol of the working classes and their hatred of the aristocracy.
