Barcelona will host a happening by the surrealist artist Lubo Kristek, renowned for staging spectacular events. His ongoing cycle, Requiem for Mobile Telephones, has toured Czechia, Austria, Germany, and Poland. In this living ritual, mobile phones (a source of emotional dependency) are transformed into a growing, itinerant assemblage. Using phones to create a collective artwork rekindles direct human communication. Among the surreal motifs are a three-breasted angel, a ballerina from the National Theatre Brno dancing with her stage soulmate, and strange cocoons—all colliding with the city’s night to turn technology into a symbol.
Kristek’s signature concept is “holographic perception,” in which several scenes unfold at once, sharpening the senses and forming a three-dimensional image in the mind of the viewer. On Friday 17 October, the happening will begin at 9 p.m. at Plaça de la Mercè. For the final culmination, performers and audience will move in procession to the nearby Port Gallery. Come and be part of the happening.
