Still from upcoming exhibition Destructures de poder
La Virreina Centre de la Imatge is being taken over by the brilliant mind of the multimedia artist, and leading light of Latin American conceptual art, Regina Silveira. Her newest exhibition Destructures de poder examines her oeuvre from the 1970s onward and features a major selection of the work she produced during the civilian-military dictatorship in Brazil (1964−85). Despite the political context of censorship and repression, her graphic, audiovisual and three-dimensional work—full of irony and conceptual shifts—is a commentary of the past, questions the status quo and imagines other realities.
Regina Silveira (Porto Alegre, 1939) is one of the pioneers in Brazil of experimentational media, using the latest technology for the creation and presentation of images. Since her arrival in Spain in 1967, Silveira has explored the possibilities of the codes of language, perspective and visual perception in drawings, prints, photomontages, videos and physical space manipulation.
