Tosca is one of the best-known verista operas, based on a play by the playwright Victorien Sardou. Sarah Bernhardt, a famous actress of the time, known for her intense performances, inspired Puccini for its composition. The premiere was at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome in 1900 with the presence of Queen Margaret, wife of King Humbert of Italy.
This version was recorded in a 32,000-seat open-air Roman amphitheater and the singers perform without amplification.
