On the occasion of the publication of Priscilla Morris’s debut novel Black Butterflies (Duckworth, 2022 (in Catalan, Papallones negres, Periscopi, 2025), Priscilla Morris speaks with the Slovenian writer and translator Simona Škrabec about the role of literature in the memory of the Balkans War.
The siege of Sarajevo, birthplace of the author's mother, is the backdrop to which Black Butterflies returns in order to come closer to the stories of those inhabitants who were able to resist and keep hope alive in times of war. In this conversation, Morris and Škrabec will speak about the power of writing to transform the horror and violence of the war into historical memory, thus turning literature into a space where survival and hope are possible.
