The voice plays a central role in this concert at L’Auditori, which opens with Manuel de Falla’s Siete canciones populares. The composer sought to renew musical language by drawing on folk traditions, much like Stravinsky and Bartók did in their works.
Benjamin Britten’s Four Sea Interludes, from his opera Peter Grimes, are orchestral pieces that transport audiences to vivid scenes of weather and time at sea. John Tavener’s The Lamb, a choral piece from 1984 with text by William Blake, remains enigmatic but may be familiar to audiences from Paolo Sorrentino’s film The Great Beauty (2013).
The importance of the voice in expressing emotion shines through Francis Poulenc’s Stabat Mater, which, though less often performed than Pergolesi’s, portrays profound grief over the loss of a loved one.
