Philippe Sands and Teresa Vicente, prominent figures in the field of environmental justice, share their efforts to take legal action against ecocide and to have ecosystems recognized as subjects with rights.
In the face of the current global climate crisis and the ongoing destruction of ecosystems, recognizing ecocide as a crime against nature has become crucial. Yet, granting rights to nature involves a continuous struggle to enforce laws that, when confronting powerful systems rooted in exploitation and extraction, often clash with the interests of corporations and states. Philippe Sands, a member of the Independent Expert Panel for the Legal Definition of Ecocide, and Teresa Vicente, leader of the Mar Menor People's Legislation Initiative—which aims to grant legal personhood to this ecosystem—discuss their experiences in advancing the rights of nature and promoting environmental justice.
Event will be held in Spanish and English with simultaneous translation into Catalan.
