Trained at the emblematic Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC), Sara Gómez (Guanabacoa, 1942-1974) made eighteen documentaries and an unfinished film entitled De cierta manera (In a Certain Way, 1977) in the 1960s and 1970s. The latter film was finished by her mentor, Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, together with co-writer Tomás González Pérez.
People Power is the first retrospective museum exhibition of this essential Afro-Cuban filmmaker, exploring her approach to the economic and cultural reality of post-revolutionary Cuba, racial and class tensions and the role of women in the organizational forms of a society that was beginning to be articulated under unprecedented political codes in which the people were not only at the center of ideological grammars, but were also the driving force behind the future of the island.
The exhibition is accompanied by a publication that includes essays, testimonies and interviews about the work of Sara Gómez.
