Film still from "Pauline Black: A 2-Tone Story," directed by Jane Mingay (UK, 2025).
A vibrant portrait of Pauline Black, the iconic voice of 2-Tone—the groundbreaking label and movement born in Coventry that fused Jamaican ska, punk rock and new wave, reshaping the sound of late 1970s and early 1980s Britain. Born to an Irish mother and Nigerian father and adopted by a conservative white family, Black grew up feeling she belonged nowhere. The film captures her journey of self-discovery and artistic empowerment: from confronting questions of identity and belonging to finding her voice within a scene shared with The Specials, Madness and Bad Manners. As the charismatic frontwoman of The Selecter, Black challenged conventions with her androgynous “rude girl” style, fierce presence and indomitable talent—securing her place as a cultural pioneer whose energy still resonates today.
Film will be screened in its original version with subtitles in Catalan or Spanish.
A film in the 2025 edition of the In-Edit International Music Documentary Film Festival.
