Few musicians have redefined the landscape of contemporary jazz and guitar with the audacity, lyricism, and consistency of Pat Metheny, a living legend backed by 20 Grammy Awards in 10 different categories. Now Metheny returns to one of his favorite venues, the Palau de la Música Catalana, with Side Eye III—featuring Chris Fishman (keyboards) and Joe Dyson (drums)—to which a plus sign (+) has been added. The additions are bassist Jermaine Paul and vocalist and percussionist Leonard Patton. The result, as Metheny himself has explained, is a sonic laboratory in which the energy of the new generation and the unmistakable melodic sensibility of his guitars converse in absolute freedom. As always, Metheny was researching and taking risks in pursuit of his ideal, his exciting and insatiable adventure, which he shared with us all. How lucky we are to be his contemporaries!
